The D’Sev’s goal for their Enpryys Campaign was to destroy the agricultural capability of Eastern Enpryys and starve the legion. They ended up burning 75% of our farmland, and several warehouses full of provisions. While the Imperium would have preferred to not lose half their army in the process, they should be pleased with the results.
Foregone’s winter of 141/142 ASU was especially brutal on Enpryys and with our ocean navy decisively defeated in the Jutta Engagement it became impossible to resupply our troops. The soldiers couldn’t even sail out to fish.
The 22nd Legion could take what little food remained while leaving the citizens to starve, or spread across Enpryys and forage for what little food remained in the wintery countryside, which meant taking from the nomads. Peldaks have immense daily caloric requirements; an army of 87,000 soldiers and 50,000 logistics personnel eat the equivalent of 450,000 firryans.
Hetman Antol took a vow of famine and encouraged the officers to do the same. They restricted their food to 1/6th that of normal, while the soldiers would lower their consumption to 3/6th. The firryan settlers were asked to voluntarily limit consumption.
Then 20,000 D’Sev Rangers arrived. While heavily outnumbered, the D’Sev were well fed and forced the peldaks to patrol and expend energy. There were two attempts to seize imperial stockpiles, but these failed.
By the dead of winter, soldiers lacked the strength to pull back their bowstrings. Many resorted to eating steamed bark.
As the temperature warmed and peldak hunger reached its peak, the D’Sev finally launched their attack on the Weppor Plains. The legion stockpiled just enough food to provide every soldier a full meal, and they managed to win that desperate battle. 22,000 peldak casualties vs 8,000 D’Sev deaths across the winter, but they survived until spring.
